What's new with this edition?

As the first separate edition of The Techniques, you will find a mind-boggling 716 new photos to complement and augment those that have appeared when this was a section of the annual edition. Of the carry-over photos, many have been recropped and have had their captions rewritten to better illustrate and describe the clinical situation being depicted. While the format has stayed largely intact, the text has been improved to make it easier to read.

The sections with the most changes are the ones with the most impact on your practice: Bridges with Full Coverage Retainers, Bridges with Partial Coverage Retainers, Crowns, Provisional Crowns & Bridges, Direct Restorations — Class I - V  Veneers — Direct Resin, Veneers — Porcelain & Indirect Resin, Bleaching, Cosmetic Periodontics, and a totally revamped Photography section that features digital technology. Long-term follow-ups are also featured in many sections to show you what happens to restorations after years of use and, sometimes, abuse.

Since knowing what to do is just as important as knowing how to do a procedure, a completely new section, Treatment Planning, has been included. This section will help answer questions such as when to do a crown instead of a veneer and when to use all-ceramic instead of ceramometal.

Some of the other “firsts” in this edition include an immediate implant and subsequent all-ceramic crown in Crowns and the surgical technique for a ridge augmentation in Cosmetic Periodontics. As always, updated fee comparisons are listed as a result of a survey sent to members of the Editorial Team and, for U.S. dentists, the latest insurance codes from the “hot-off-the-press” CDT- 4, published by the American Dental Association.

Since this edition concentrates on procedures, only a few products are mentioned. For a complete appraisal of available products to help you perform these techniques, please see the annual edition of REALITY, which features evaluations and commentary on over 500 materials, equipment, and devices.
